Harnessing the power of the summer solstice, a Renault 4 E-Tech electric ‘Plein Sud’ with its distinctive full-length electric opening canvas roof, is setting out on the Easee Sun Run – a journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats powered only by solar energy, with Stonehenge providing the symbolic midpoint for a journey built around a car that quite literally lets the sun in.
More than a long-distance challenge, the drive is designed to showcase solar energy in action across Britain. Along the way, the Renault 4 E-Tech electric ‘Plein Sud’ will stop at selected locations that demonstrate how sunshine is already being turned into something useful – from powering businesses and communities to supporting new ideas in science, engineering and mobility.
The choice of car is a natural part of the story. “Plein Sud” translates as “due south” – the ideal orientation for solar panels in the northern hemisphere – while the roof itself is a nod to the original Renault 4’s simple fabric roof in modern, fully electric form.
The Renault 4 E-Tech electric ‘Plein Sud’ will be charged using solar energy gathered along the route, supplied by a combination of established solar installations and portable solar-charged energy storage using a Charge Pro three-phase EV charger provided by Easee.
Adam Wood, Managing Director, Renault UK, said: “Stonehenge at the summer solstice is one of Britain’s great sun-filled images, making it the perfect place to stop and highlight the power of solar energy. The Renault 4 E-Tech electric ‘Plein Sud’ already invites the outside in, but here the sunshine is doing more than setting the scene – it’s what keeps the car moving.”
The Renault 4 E-Tech electric ‘Plein Sud’ is the only electric car in its segment to offer a fully opening roof, combining open-air character with the usability and versatility of the Renault 4 E-Tech electric. Its wide 80x92cm opening gives passengers an open view of the sky above, yet boot space remains unchanged at up to 1,350 litres with the rear seats folded.
Like the Renault 4-Tech electric it is based on, the ‘Plein Sud’ version uses a 52kWh battery and 150hp powertrain for a WLTP range of up to 242 miles, while rapid DC charging up to 100kW enables a 15–80% charge in around 30 minutes.
Available in techno+ and iconic+ trim levels, the Renault 4 E-Tech electric ‘Plein Sud’ qualifies for the full Electric Car Grant and is on sale now priced from £27,445 OTR (including the Electric Car Grant).
Further updates, imagery and details from the route will be shared on completion of the drive.
