The fan-built LEGO® Renault 5 Turbo 3E has raced its way to 10,000 supporters on the LEGO® Ideas platform in just 44 days, fuelled by international support and Renault’s call for enthusiasts of the brand to get behind the project.
Created by UK engineer Dave Collins, the brick-built tribute to Renault’s all-electric “mini-supercar” has transformed from a one-off passion project into a global success story, earning its place in the official LEGO® review process in a fraction of the 32 months normally allowed.
The model has captured imaginations since Renault threw its support behind the project, with thousands of fans from around the world rallying behind the idea and helping carry it to the 10,000-supporter milestone. What started in Collins’ spare room in Devon has quickly become something much bigger, celebrating the same blend of nostalgia, attitude and reinvention that defines the Renault 5 Turbo 3E itself.
The scale and speed of the response underline the enduring appeal of the Renault 5 Turbo story. From the wild, rally-bred originals of the 1980s to the bold, electric Renault 5 Turbo 3E, it’s a shape and spirit that continues to resonate. From 2027, just 1,980 examples of the real-life 555 hp £140,000 Renault 5 Turbo 3E are set to be built – the number a homage to the year the first Renault Turbo was produced – and it is capable of 0-60 mph in under 3.5 seconds and a top speed approaching 170 mph.
Dave Collins, creator of the LEGO® Renault 5 Turbo 3E, said: “I knew there was something special about the car when I started building it, but I never expected this kind of reaction. Watching the numbers climb so quickly has been surreal – every time I checked, it felt like another big jump.
“What’s really struck me is how global it’s been. People from all over the world getting behind it, sharing it, voting for it – it’s turned into something far bigger than just my model. Hitting 10,000 supporters this quickly is incredible.”
Adam Wood, Managing Director, Renault UK, said: “We all fell in love with Dave’s creation when we first saw it – and to see that love resonate around the world has been incredible. To reach the point where Dave’s model will now be reviewed for production is a fantastic achievement, and it says a lot about the connection people have with the Renault 5 and the excitement around the Renault 5 Turbo 3E.
“There’s a real sense of fun and creativity at the heart of this project, just as there is with the full-size version. It’s been brilliant to see so many people get behind it, and we’re really excited to see the reaction to it at Goodwood when it will be displayed – and celebrated - alongside the real car.”
With the 10,000-supporter milestone secured, the LEGO® Renault 5 Turbo 3E now enters the LEGO® Ideas review phase, where it will be assessed for potential production as an official set.
For those who want to see Collins’ model up close, his Renault 5 Turbo 3E recreation will be on display on the Renault stand at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, which takes place from 9th-12th July.
