THE Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV have been nominated in two brand new categories in the 40th anniversary of the What Car? Car of the Year Awards.

The forthcoming Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and the best-selling Outlander PHEV have been nominated in the new ‘Family SUV’ and ‘Hybrid’ categories respectively, with the winners due to be crowned at a special awards celebration on January 23, 2018 at London’s Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane.

Adding to the competitiveness of the annual awards, the duo of new categories recognise the increasing popularity of hybrid vehicles and how the SUV market has rapidly expanded over the past decade as more and more car buyers turn to the high-riding models.

As one of the most coveted accolades in the automotive industry, the awards are considered to be highly prestigious, resonating with manufacturers and consumers alike. The judging process is rigorous, with What Car? testing each car against key rivals on UK roads and at its dedicated test track to ensure that only cars that meet the highest standards feature.

If the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV are successful in their respective categories, they will then join the other 15 award-winning vehicles in the running for the overall Car of the Year Award.

What Car? Editor, Steve Huntingford, said: “It is always an exciting time of year for us when it comes to announcing the long list for the What Car? Car of the Year Awards, but it has been made even more special this year, because we are celebrating such a milestone anniversary. Over the last 40 years of the Awards, we have seen the automotive industry change dramatically, rising to the challenge of ever changing consumer trends and rapidly advancing technologies.

“Manufacturers never fail to surprise us with the vast range of outstanding cars they introduce and this year is no exception. The expansion of our long list to include even more contenders means that our judging panel has a tougher job than ever before in trying to select a stand-out car in each category and decide on an overall What Car? Car of the Year Award winner.”
